Vietnamese cassava exports
Vietnam’s export market structure for Vietnam’s cassava exports has remained largely unchanged, with China continuing to be the largest market. It accounted for 92.4% of export value. Other markets include Malaysia and Taiwan (China), each representing 1.4%. Meanwhile, South Korea and the Philippines each account for 0.9%.
Citing statistics from China Customs, in the first five months of 2026, China’s imports of both cassava chips and cassava starch declined in volume compared with the same period in 2025. China imported 1.622 million tons of cassava chips (HS 07141020), valued at US$381.2 million. This represented declines of 38.3% in volume and 25.3% in value year on year.
Thailand remained China’s largest cassava chip supplier, with exports reaching 720,300 tons worth US$171.4 million. These figures were down 64% in volume and 55.9% in value compared with the same period in 2025.
Thailand’s share of China’s total cassava chip imports stood at 44.4%. This was significantly lower than the 76.3% recorded in the first five months of 2025. Vietnam ranked as the second-largest cassava chip supplier to China, exporting 658,300 tons worth US$153.2 million. This represented increases of 12.5% in volume and 34% in value year on year. Vietnam’s share of China’s total cassava chip imports rose to 40.6%, compared with 22.3% in the same period last year.

Although export volume declined by 9.2%, export value increased by 6.6% year on year. Vietnam’s share of China’s total cassava starch imports reached 49.4%. This was slightly higher than the 48.9% recorded during the same period in 2025.

Vietnamese cassava materials
The domestic cassava market has become increasingly competitive as most major growing regions have completed their previous crop season. In the Central and Central Highlands regions, nearly all cassava starch processing factories have stopped operations and entered an early off-season period.
Meanwhile, in the southern region and Tây Ninh, some factories have begun early operations for the 2026-2027 crop season. However, they are facing very high fresh cassava prices, ranging from VND 4,250-4,350 per kilogram for cassava with a starch content of 30%. Limited raw material supply, combined with depleted inventories, has pushed finished product prices sharply higher.
Currently, FOB export prices for cassava starch at Ho Chi Minh City ports have reached US$600-620 per ton. Cross-border transaction prices to China have also remained high at around CNY 3,720-3,850 per ton.
Notably, demand for Vietnamese cassava chips has surged in the domestic market due to the large-scale implementation of E10 biofuel. This has increased pressure on raw material procurement for ethanol production. As a result, intense competition for cassava supplies has emerged among the animal feed industry, biofuel sector, and export markets during the middle of the year.
