Vietnam’s jackfruit exports have emerged as one of the best-performing fruit and vegetable products. They earned nearly VND 3 trillion in export revenue within the first four months of 2026.
After years of waiting, Vietnam’s jackfruit industry has received a major boost. China officially began allowing the import of fresh Vietnamese jackfruit through official channels from June 1, 2026. This is a significant milestone for a fruit that ranks among the most widely cultivated crops in the country.
According to official statistics, Vietnam’s jackfruit exports exceeded USD 38 million in April 2026. This figure was up 75% from the previous month and 28% year-on-year. In the first four months of 2026, export turnover reached more than USD 112 million, equivalent to nearly VND 3 trillion. This represented a 6.6% increase compared to the same period last year.
With this performance, jackfruit now accounts for approximately 5.5% of Vietnam’s total fruit and vegetable export value. It also ranks among the country’s top 10 fruit and vegetable export products.
Vietnam’s jackfruit exports
China remains the leading import market for Vietnam’s jackfruit exports. The country has particularly strong demand for yellow-fleshed jackfruit varieties. In particular, Thai jackfruit (Chanrai), which currently makes up the majority of Vietnam’s cultivated area, is highly sought after.
In addition to fresh fruit consumption, many Chinese companies use jackfruit as a raw material. They produce dried jackfruit, jackfruit powder, snack foods, and other processed products for the domestic market.
The approval for official exports is expected to significantly reduce trade risks. It will also create favorable conditions for businesses and farmers to expand production areas in a more systematic and professional manner.
Vietnam currently has around 84,000 hectares of jackfruit plantations, of which more than 56,000 hectares are in the harvesting stage. These plantations produce nearly one million tons annually. There are approximately 85% of the specialized cultivation area that plants with early-maturing Thai jackfruit. This variety plays a dominant role in the country’s export activities.
Beyond its economic value, jackfruit is a crop with exceptional potential. This is especially true in the face of increasingly severe climate change.
Jackfruit has strong drought tolerance and resistance to pests and diseases. In addition, its adaptability to a wide range of soil conditions and high productivity have made it one of the most sustainable fruit crops.
Vietnamese jackfruit
Several agricultural research organizations around the world have even described jackfruit as a “savior crop.” They cite its potential role in ensuring future food security amid increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
In the United States, jackfruit has been available in the state of Florida. Meanwhile, many countries across South Asia and Southeast Asia are promoting the expansion of jackfruit cultivation. This is largely due to the crop’s strong economic returns.
According to many international agricultural experts, a mature jackfruit tree can generate substantial income from multiple sources. These include fresh fruit, seeds, timber, and processed products. In fact, virtually every part of the tree can be utilized to create economic value.
Despite the positive momentum, Vietnam’s jackfruit export companies still have considerable room for growth.
In recent years, jackfruit growers have repeatedly faced sharp price declines. Particularly, export disruptions and stringent quarantine requirements imposed by importing countries have put significant pressure on prices. In addition, many shipments encountered customs clearance difficulties. As a result, excess supplies were redirected to the domestic market.
However, China has officially opened its market to fresh Vietnamese jackfruit through formal import channels. As a result, these pressures are likely to ease significantly in the coming years.
Vietnamese jackfruit trees
In addition to the Chinese market, many experts believe that Vietnamese jackfruit has strong growth potential abroad. In particular, opportunities are emerging in Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, and several European countries. The growing consumer preference for plant-based, fiber-rich, and nutritious foods is boosting the popularity of tropical fruits worldwide.
In particular, the industry is benefiting from growing demand for value-added products. Examples include dried jackfruit, jackfruit powder, juice, ready-to-eat foods, and ingredients for plant-based products.
Vietnam is continuing to improve the quality of its cultivation areas, meet international phytosanitary standards, and expand deep-processing activities. As a result, jackfruit could well become the country’s next billion-dollar fruit and vegetable export industry. It could then join established export leaders such as durian, bananas, and dragon fruit.
The fruit has strong advantages in terms of cultivated area, production volume, and market demand. Therefore, it is expected to become one of the new stars of Vietnam’s agricultural export sector. Once considered a humble local crop, it is now attracting increasing international attention.
