Vinh Chau is the largest shallot-growing area in Vietnam’s Southwest region, with more than 6,500 hectares under cultivation. Farmers use around 5,000 hectares of the total cultivated area for commercial shallot production. As a result, the area generates an annual output of over 100,000 tons. Vinh Chau shallots are relatively easy to cultivate and adapt well to various soil types, particularly clay loam, loam, and sandy loam soils.
At present, farmers cultivate Vinh Chau shallots in accordance with Vietgap standards. This practice helps provide consumers with safe and healthy agricultural products. The harvest season typically begins before the Lunar New Year and lasts until around March of the following year.
Each year, farmers in Vinh Chau usually start planting shallots around the ninth lunar month. Harvesting takes place after approximately 2.5 to 3 months, depending on weather conditions. After harvest, they bundle the shallots into clusters and pack them in mesh bags. Then, they will sell them to traders, supermarkets, and Vietnamese export companies.
