Vietnam’s coffee exports reach USD 4.23 billion in the first five months

Vietnam's coffee exports

Vietnam’s coffee exports continued to decline in May 2026 due to tightening supply. According to the Vietnam Customs Department, the country exported 143,000 tonnes of coffee worth USD 639.4 million in May 2026. This represented a decline of 10.8% in volume and 30.3% in value compared with May 2025.

In the first five months, Vietnam exported 927,300 tonnes of coffee valued at USD 4.23 billion. This was up 7.8% in volume but down 13.5% in value year-on-year. The main reason is due to a sharp decline in coffee prices. Specifically, Vietnam’s average coffee export price in the first five months of 2026 reached USD 4,557 per tonne. This went down 19.7% compared with the same period in 2025.

Overall, Vietnam’s coffee exports to most markets continued to record positive growth. Europe remained the largest consumption region and a key destination for Vietnamese coffee exports. Exports to major European markets maintained positive growth in volume during the first five months of 2026.

Notably, Asia showed more encouraging signs for Vietnam’s coffee exports. This trend was driven by rising demand from China and the continued stability of the Japanese market. In the Americas, the United States remained one of Vietnam’s principal export destinations. Meanwhile, Algeria emerged as a promising market for Vietnamese coffee in Africa.

In China, a highly promising coffee consumption market, the 2026 China–Vietnam Coffee Business Matching Conference occurred in Yunnan Province. The event created new opportunities for cooperation between enterprises from the two countries. Beyond serving as a trade bridge, the conference also contributed to the development of sustainable supply chains. In addition, it promoted the flow of goods through key border gateways and opened up new growth opportunities for Vietnam’s coffee exports.

Mr. Li Yi is the Deputy Director of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Commerce. Speaking at the conference, he affirmed that Yunnan highly values its trade cooperation with Vietnam. He said the department will continue to improve cross-border logistics infrastructure, optimize customs clearance procedures at border gates, and provide the most favorable policy support mechanisms. These efforts are will help businesses from both countries shorten transportation times and reduce costs. They are also likely to enable Vietnamese coffee to penetrate deeper into China’s domestic consumer market.

Mr. Le Hoang Tai is the Deputy Director General of the Trade Promotion Agency. He emphasized that Vietnam is proud to be the world’s leading producer and exporter of Robusta coffee. He noted that output remains stable and quality continues to improve thanks to modern deep-processing technologies.

To promote the sustainable development of the sector, Mr. Tai proposed four key solutions. These include further facilitating import activities, strengthening the exchange of information on technical standards and market requirements, and enhancing cross-border logistics connectivity. They also involve studying cooperative programs to develop high-quality coffee products aligned with emerging green consumption trends.

Mr. Lu Qiang is the Vice Governor of the Honghe Prefecture People’s Government. He expressed strong support for the proposed cooperation directions. He pledged that the Honghe administration would continue investing in infrastructure, reforming administrative procedures, and upgrading joint inspection facilities. In addition, it would provide maximum support for product display and promotion spaces. As a result, Vietnamese coffee enterprises can confidently invest, establish direct trade links, and achieve the highest possible economic efficiency.

Mr. Li Gonglie is the Secretary-General of the Yunnan Coffee Association. He noted that China’s coffee consumption market is experiencing rapid growth. This trend is particularly evident in the instant coffee and convenient roasted coffee segments favored by younger consumers. He affirmed that the association would play an active coordinating role by providing information on standards and import requirements. It would also directly connect major Chinese distribution groups with reputable coffee exporters from Vietnam.

Mr. Pham Thang is the Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee–Cocoa Association. He said that Vietnamese coffee exporters and growers are currently adhering strictly to international traceability and phytosanitary requirements. He expressed his hope that Chinese partners would increase joint ventures and transfer packaging and deep-processing technologies closer to Vietnam’s coffee-growing regions. This would allow both sides to leverage their respective strengths and enhance the added value of the coffee supply chain.

Although Vietnam’s coffee exports in the early months of 2026 were affected by limited supply and a sharp decline in prices, there were still certain challenges. However, demand in many key markets remained resilient. With continued efforts to promote trade and expand cooperation with international partners, Vietnam’s coffee industry is likely to further strengthen its position in the global market. In addition, increasing value through deep processing is also an important factor supporting this growth. It is also likely to effectively capitalize on growth opportunities in high-potential markets such as China in the years ahead.
