Agro, forestry and fishery exports in the first half of 2017

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), agro, forestry and fishery exports in June 2017 was $ 2.97 billion. The total export value in the first half of 2017 was $17.1 billion, up 13.1%.

In particular, the value of exporting of agricultural products was $9.1 billion, up 15.4%. Export value of fishery products was $3.5 billion, up 14.1%. Export value of forestry products was $3.8 billion, up 12.8%.

Among agricultural product exports, rice, rubber and tea have been increasing in both volume and value. Specifically, rice export volume in June is 413,000 tonnes with value of $182 million. Total volume in the first half was 2.8 million tonnes, up 6.3% over the same period in 2016.

As usual, China was the largest import market for Vietnamese rice with 46.5% market share. Rice export volume to this market reached 1.1 million tonnes, up 34.2%. The value was $488 million, up 31.7% over the same period in 2016.

Rubber export volume in the first 6 months of 2017 was 462,000 tonnes, up 5%. The export value was $867 million, up 58.6% over the same period in 2016. Average rubber export price reached $1,957/MT, up 59.8% over the same period of 2016.

Tea export volume in June 2017 was 13,000 tonnes with the value of $22 million. Total value of tea export was 63,000 tonnes, up 17%. Total value was $98 million, up 15% over the same period of 2016. Coffee and cashew nut were two commodities that have decreased in volume but increased in value.

Specifically, coffee export in the first 6 months of 2017 was 817,000 tonnes, down 16.7% in volume. However, the value was $1.86 billion, up 9.5% over the same period in 2016. Average export price reached $2,264/MT, up 32.1% over the same period in 2016. Germany and the United States were still two largest markets with market share of 16.8% and 14.8%, respectively.

For cashew nuts, exports were 149,000 tonnes and $ 1.5 billion, down 4.4% in volume but up 20.8% in value. Average export price was $9,562/MT, up 25.1% over the same period in 2016.

Especially, the export value of vegetables and fruits in June 2017 was $283 million. Total exports of fruit and vegetable in the first 6 months of 2017 was $1.7 billion, up 44.6%. China, the United States, Japan and South Korea are the top four importers of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, accounting for 84.7% of the total value of fruit and vegetable exports from Vietnam.

Most surprisingly, the export value of fruits and vegetables increased sharply in United Arab Emirates (96.3%), Russia (67.2%), Japan (56.1% China (50.5%), United States (23.5%), South Korea (14.9%) and Thailand (12.5%).

However, the import value of agriculture, forestry and fishery in June 2017 was $2.94 billion. The total import value for these sectors in the first 6 months of 2017 was $ 14.06 billion, up 25.4%. The import value of major agricultural commodities reached $10.74 billion, up 37.8%.
