Entrepreneurship in asparagus cultivation in Vietnam

Asparagus cultivation in Vietnam

After nine years of asparagus cultivation in Vietnam—known as the “king of vegetables”—Vu Huy Tuan in Bac Ninh now earns over ten million VND per day. He supplies many supermarkets and markets across northern Vietnam.

Since 2012, Mr. Vu Huy Tuan (31 years old, from Luong Tai District, Bac Ninh Province) began cultivating green asparagus. This vegetable is famous as the “king of vegetables” or “imperial vegetable” due to its high nutritional and economic value.

After nine years, his asparagus farm covering more than 16,000 square meters give harvest regularly every day. It generates profits of over ten million VND per day.

After graduating from Hanoi University of Industry, Tuan faced a difficult time when Vietnamese carrots were out of season and prices were low. This left his family—who had a long tradition in agriculture—without a clear direction for the next crop cycle. At that time, a cousin returning from abroad introduced him to Vietnamese green asparagus, a high-value crop. Tuan and his family decided to take a risk and try cultivating it.

“At first, I borrowed about 100 million VND from acquaintances to import seedlings and start the trial. Up to now, this plantation has remained productive and has not needed to be replanted,” Tuan recalled.

After two months of asparagus cultivation in Vietnam and another three months of growing and care, the plants produced their first harvest. However, Tuan then faced another challenge: finding a market for his product.

“The vegetable was so new that even my family only got to taste it at harvest time. As a result, people did not know about it yet,” he said. “I had to find ways to make them familiar with it. Every day, I transported asparagus to supermarkets and shops across provinces, introducing it and asking for consignment sales. Gradually, more people learned about it, and I also became a regular supplier for them,” Tuan shared.

Mr. Tuan said that, on average, his family harvests about 200 kg of fresh green asparagus per day. In addition, they purchase around 300 kg from local households in the area. With premium-grade green asparagus priced at 70,000 VND per kg—mainly supplied to “VIP” customers, gourmet consumers, restaurants, and clean food stores—Mr. Tuan has become a key distributor of green asparagus for many supermarkets and markets across northern Vietnam. He earns between 12–15 million VND per day, and his annual profit reaches around 1.5 billion VND.

Nine years ago, Mr. Tuan was one of the first two people in Bac Ninh to experiment with this new crop variety. He had to independently learn everything, including cultivation and care techniques as well as finding market outlets. He recalls that in the early days, when people passed by and saw the small leaves, they would wonder what strange plant he was growing. Some even asked whether he had been tricked into planting some kind of grass. “At that time, I could only smile because I myself had not yet seen the results,” he said.

In the first year, the soil was new so the plants grew quickly. However, in the second year, they were affected by pests and fungal diseases and failed to develop well. Tuan had to seek advice from experts and switch to using biological products, organic fertilizers, self-fermented fish protein fertilizer, as well as manure from goats, corn, and soybeans. He later installed an automated irrigation system, learned advanced cultivation techniques, and shared his knowledge with local farmers.

After nine years, around 50 households in Bac Ninh and other provinces have adopted techniques of asparagus cultivation in Vietnam from Vu Huy Tuan. In 2019, he established a cooperative to secure product consumption for local farmers. Currently, his asparagus farming model has created stable jobs for more than ten workers. They receive monthly incomes ranging from 5 to 6 million VND.

In addition to fresh asparagus production, Tuan has also developed processed products such as asparagus tea, freeze-dried asparagus, and powder for children. These products are increasingly popular in the market.
