Vietnam’s green asparagus brings high income to farmers in Ninh Thuan Province

Vietnam's green asparagus

Phuoc Dinh Commune in Thuan Nam District, Ninh Thuan Province, currently has more than 10 hectares of Vietnam’s green asparagus. Most of the cultivation area is available around the Nui Mot Reservoir. The shift in crop structure from short-term annual crops to green asparagus has enabled households to increase their income. As a result, their livelihoods have improved significantly.

Vietnamese asparagus has proven to be an effective alternative crop thanks to its high economic value and stable market demand. Therefore, many farmers in the area have gradually expanded cultivation and adopted more sustainable production practices. The transition has not only enhanced household earnings but has also contributed to greater economic stability for local communities.

The pioneer who introduced green asparagus cultivation here is Mr. Nguyen Huu Cu of Son Hai 2 Hamlet. Having lived in the area for decades, Mr. Cu observed that despite frequent drought conditions, Nui Mot Reservoir had never run dry. More than 70 hectares of farmland surrounding the reservoir remained productive year-round thanks to a stable water supply. However, local farmers had traditionally cultivated crops such as peanuts, tomatoes, and chili peppers, which generated relatively low profits.

Determined to improve farmers’ incomes, Mr. Cu searched for a high-value crop to replace traditional seasonal crops. In 2018, after conducting research, he found that Vietnam’s green asparagus was gaining popularity in the market. This was because it commanded a high selling price, required relatively low maintenance, and provided consistent harvests. He therefore invested in cultivating three sao of Vietnamese green asparagus.

After six months of planting and care, the crop adapted well to local conditions and delivered promising yields. On average, he harvests between 8 and 12 kilograms per sao per day. With selling prices ranging from VND 50,000 to VND 55,000 per kilogram, each sao generates a monthly income of more than VND 10 million after expenses. This figure is approximately three times higher than the income earned from traditional crops. Encouraged by these results, Mr. Cu recently expanded his asparagus area by an additional four sao, bringing his family’s total cultivation area to seven sao.

Mr. Cu’s success has opened up a new direction for crop restructuring in Phuoc Dinh Commune. Over the past two years, 25 households have boldly shifted from traditional crops to green asparagus cultivation. The commune’s total asparagus-growing area has now exceeded 10 hectares.

On average, each household cultivates around four sao of green asparagus. Meanwhile, Mr. Bui Van Hao operates the largest area with eight sao. According to Mr. Hao, Vietnamese asparagus enterprises purchase all harvested asparagus directly at the farm. As a result, farmers do not have to worry about unsold produce or declining prices. Farmers can therefore focus entirely on improving cultivation practices and increasing productivity.

Recognizing the economic benefits of green asparagus production, many local households are continuing to expand their cultivation areas. In May, Mr. Ho Van Thanh of Son Hai 2 Hamlet decided to convert four sao of peanut fields into Vietnam’s green asparagus production. He hopes the crop will provide his family with a better standard of living in the years ahead.

Mr. Huynh Ngoc Ho is an agricultural officer of Phuoc Dinh Commune. According to him, households converting to green asparagus cultivation receive financial support of VND 1.7 million per sao to install water-saving irrigation systems. The commune will continue promoting the application of science and technology in agricultural production.

In addition, it will encourage farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices to maximize the benefits of this crop. At the same time, local authorities will closely monitor the expansion of Vietnam’s green asparagus cultivation. This measure is intended to ensure balanced development and prevent excessive growth that could lead to supply-demand imbalances.
