Strict control of pesticides and training of clean production process for farmers are the key to control quality of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. As a result, it regains the confidence of domestic consumers and enhances the prestige in the world market.
In the first 7 months of 2017, export value of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables was $ 2.03 billion. Continually, China accounted for the largest share, up to 76%, followed by Japan, the United States and South Korea. Markets with high increase in export value were Hong Kong (98%), China (63%), Japan (61%), UAE (60%), Russia (49%).
On ther other hand, import value of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables have also increased in most markets. Notably, Vietnam spent $ 517 million importing vegetables and fruits from Thailand, accounting for 60.5% and up 217%. Other increasing markets are China (30%), India (121%), New Zealand (53%), South Korea (73%).
According to the Association of Vietnamese Fruits and Vegetables, fruits now account for about 90% of total fruit and vegetable exports. In addition, fruits also accounted for most of the import value, vegetables just accounted for a small percentage.
Local consumers who choose to buy the imported fruits are mostly high – income class. They trust in prestige, quality, and difference of imported fruits. Moreover, foreign distribution systems such as BigC, Aeon, Lotte Mart have been playing a significant role in distributing imported fruits.
According to Ministry of Industry and Trade, exports of agricultural products in general and vegetables and fruits in particular have great opportunities. Specifically, Vietnam signed 16 Free Trade Agreements with more than 50 countries and economies in the world. Accordingly, export markets of agricultural products from Vietnam has been increasing.
On the other hand, price of agricultural products in the world tends to increase over time. Furthermore, world markets often have higher demand for tropical fruits in the last months of the year. Therefore, estimate export value of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables is going to exceed $ 3 billion.
However, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are still facing many challenges. The competitiveness of fruits and vegetables from Vietnam in the world market is still weak. Typically, there are five kinds of Vietnamese fresh fruits that are allowed to import into Korean market. They are coconut, pineapple, banana, dragon fruit and mango.
In fact, only coconut, mango and dragon fruit are imported. Vietnamese dragon fruit accounts for 63% of market share in Korea, while mango only accounts for 1%. Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan are three main countries that export mango to Korea. Pineapples and bananas from Vietnam can not compete with those from the Philippines.
Therefore, it is urgent now to associate and build the value chain of agriculture, from cultivation to processing and storage. That helps improve the quality and efficiency of agricultural production. Only doing this well, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables not only maintain the domestic market but also expand the global market.
