Vietnamese mangosteen has entered its peak harvest season in many southern provinces. However, farm-gate prices have fallen to just VND 20,000–25,000 per kilogram, the lowest level recorded in many years.
Mr. Pham Van Hoang is a farmer, who owns 70 mangosteen trees in Binh Duong Province. He said this year’s output is likely to reach around 5 tons. This goes up 20% compared with the same period last year. However, falling prices have overshadowed the joy of a bumper harvest.
According to Mr. Hoang, mangosteen prices were already 20–25% lower than last year’s levels. Over the past month, prices have continued to decline sharply. As a result, they are now hovering at only about VND 20,000 per kilogram at the farm gate. “If we calculate the average return for the entire season, my family will hardly make any profit this year because fertilizer and labor costs have both increased,” Mr. Hoang said.
In Dong Nai Province, the situation is much the same for Mr. Thanh’s family. His family owns a Vietnamese mangosteen orchard covering more than 1.5 hectares. At the beginning of the season, the family sold mangosteens to specialty fruit stores for around VND 65,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, traders purchased them at approximately VND 40,000 per kilogram. However, during the final harvests two weeks ago, prices had dropped to just VND 22,000 per kilogram.

“At the start of the season, I thought we would make a good profit of Vietnamese mangosteen this year. Prices fell too quickly from the middle of the season onward. As a result, after deducting all expenses, we are left with only a profit of a few tens of millions of dong,” Mr. Thanh said.
The price decline does not remain limited to a few orchards. It has occurred across many mangosteen-growing areas in southern Vietnam as the market enters the peak harvest period. Mr. Vu Van Hoa is a mangosteen trader in the Lai Thieu area of Ho Chi Minh City. He said that bulk purchase prices at orchards are currently at their lowest level on record.
According to Mr. Hoa, supply this year is significantly higher than in previous years. He purchases several tons of Vietnamese mangosteens from local growers each day. This represents an increase of around 30–40% compared with last year. Meanwhile, demand has not grown at the same pace, causing purchasing prices to decline continuously.
At the Hoc Mon, Thu Duc, and Binh Dien wholesale markets, mangosteen arrivals have risen sharply in recent weeks. Wholesale prices currently range from VND 33,000–35,000 per kilogram for large-sized fruit and VND 30,000–32,000 per kilogram for smaller fruit. This is down about 10% from the same period last year.

Market operators said favorable weather conditions resulted in a high fruit-setting rate and significantly increased output. Domestic mangosteens are of good quality and competitively priced, allowing them to account for the majority of sales and substantially replace imports from Thailand.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, mangosteen is not an isolated case. Favorable weather this year has boosted production of many fruits across southern provinces, including durian, mango, dragon fruit, and avocado.
As supply has expanded rapidly while demand has not increased at a corresponding rate, prices for many fruits have declined. “The drop in mangosteen prices during the peak harvest season is a normal market response to supply and demand dynamics,” Mr. Nguyen said.
Retail prices have also eased accordingly. At many fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City, small-sized mangosteens are selling for around VND 35,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, larger fruit ranges from VND 45,000 to VND 60,000 per kilogram. Along many roads in Ho Chi Minh City and Tay Ninh Province, the fruit is being sold at prices of VND 40,000–50,000 per kilogram.
