Vietnam is the world’s leading exporter of Robusta coffee. The country is transforming itself from a “production powerhouse” into a “branding powerhouse.” According to experts, building a national brand will provide the foundation for increasing the value of Vietnam’s Robusta coffee. It will also promote deep processing and strengthen the industry’s competitiveness in international markets.
Vietnam currently ranks first in the world in both Robusta coffee production and exports. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam’s Robusta coffee accounts for approximately 40–45% of global production. Depending on the crop year, it also represents 40–67% of the world’s Robusta coffee exports.
In 2025, Vietnamese coffee exports reached around 1.59 million metric tons. Despite this, the industry achieved a record US$8.9 billion in export revenue. This milestone reflects the sector’s transition from volume-driven growth. It also highlights a strategy focused on improving quality and creating greater added value.
This achievement has been the result of the Central Highlands’ natural advantages, together with a shift in production practices. Farmers and businesses are placing greater emphasis on quality, sustainable cultivation methods, modern processing technologies, and market diversification.

Vietnam’s Robusta coffee
Although Vietnam is the world’s largest exporter of Robusta coffee, the industry still faces several challenges. Most Vietnam’s Robusta coffee is available for export as raw beans. Meanwhile, the level of deep processing and brand development remains below its full potential.
Domestic Vietnamese coffee enterprises continue to face constraints in terms of capital, technology, and market expansion. As a result, the value-added processing segment is still dominated by foreign-invested companies.
In addition, coffee production remains fragmented and small-scale. This makes it difficult to ensure consistent quality, establish traceability, and comply with increasingly stringent international standards. One of the most significant upcoming requirements is the European Union’s Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR), which is going to take effect in early 2027.
A national brand is not intended to replace individual company brands. Rather, it serves as a shared symbol that reinforces the quality and reputation of Vietnamese coffee in the global marketplace. It also provides a stronger foundation for businesses to develop their own brands, enhance product value, and expand their market share.
To achieve this goal, the coffee sector must focus on standardizing quality and developing sustainable coffee-growing regions. It should also increase the share of deep-processed products and strengthen traceability systems. In addition, it needs to protect geographical indications and promote Vietnam’s Robusta coffee as a symbol of green and sustainable development.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, coffee quality should start from the very beginning of the production process. Selecting high-quality varieties and adopting advanced cultivation practices are critical to increasing product value. Harvesting only ripe cherries and improving post-harvest processing and manufacturing technologies are equally important.
In the coming years, the ministry will continue refining policies to encourage investment in deep processing and develop post-harvest logistics infrastructure. It will also support cooperatives and farmers in improving the quality of raw coffee beans. The goal is to reduce post-harvest losses and increase the value of Vietnamese coffee. It also aims to strengthen the industry’s competitiveness in international markets.
Alongside production development, communication and promotion have been identified as key strategies for building the image of Vietnam’s Robusta coffee. Showcasing sustainable production models and highlighting the cultural heritage associated with coffee will help bring Vietnamese Robusta closer to consumers. Strengthening brand recognition will further expand its reach in both domestic and international markets.
The long-term objective is not only to maintain Vietnam’s position as the world’s largest producer of Robusta coffee. It is also to establish Vietnamese Robusta as a global symbol of quality, sustainability, and high added value.
