After an initially volatile start to the year, Vietnam’s star anise exports are showing positive signals. This comes as demand in major markets gradually recovers.
According to data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, in March 2026, Vietnam exported around 1,204 tons of star anise, earning 4.7 million USD. This represents a sharp increase of 62.3% compared to the previous month in both volume and value.
This is a notable increase, reflecting an improvement in the market after a period of stagnation. Overall, in the first quarter of 2026, total star anise exports reached nearly 2,960 tons. Accordingly, the export turnover was about 11.7 million USD.
In terms of markets, India continues to hold its position as the largest buyer of Vietnamese star anise. In March 2026 alone, this market imported around 702 tons. This accounted for the overwhelming share of total exports.

Vietnam’s star anise exports
Cumulatively in the first three months of the year, Vietnam’s star anise exports to India reached 1,861 tons. This is equivalent to nearly 63% of the market share.
In addition, other markets such as the United States and the European Union are showing more positive signals. Exports to the US reached 228 tons in the first three months, up nearly 12%.
Meanwhile, the European market recorded growth of more than 50%. This indicates that the trend of market diversification is gradually proving effective. It is also helping reduce dependence on a single region.
Currently, Asia remains the largest consumer region for Vietnam’s star anise, accounting for nearly 80% of total export value. However, a decline of nearly 20% compared to the same period last year shows that this market is not yet fully stable.
In the meanwhile, growth in Europe opens up new opportunities. The main driver is that European consumers who increasingly prefer natural and organic spice products.

However, the Vietnamese star anise enterprises still faces many challenges. These include logistics costs and fluctuations in global energy prices, which directly affect exporters’ profit margins.
In addition, increasingly strict requirements for quality standards, traceability, and international certifications are forcing businesses to invest more in their production chains.
In Vietnam, Lạng Sơn is the largest star anise growing region in the country. Cultivation areas are available in districts such as Văn Quan, Bình Gia, Bắc Sơn, Tràng Định, Chi Lăng, Văn Lãng, and Cao Lộc.
Thanks to favorable climate and soil conditions, Lạng Sơn star anise is of high quality. It has a high essential oil content and is widely favored in many international markets.
In the context of rising demand for natural spices, Vietnam’s star anise exports are one of the export products with stable potential. This is especially true if Vietnam can effectively take advantage of opportunities in the European market. It also depends on enhancing value through deeper processing.
