In the first five months of 2026, China significantly increased its imports of coffee from Vietnam. Import volume rose by 76.9% and import value increased by 87.1% compared to the same period last year.
According to statistics from China’s Customs, the country’s coffee imports totaled 85.9 thousand tonnes worth USD 651.9 million during the first five months of 2026. This represented a year-on-year increase of 0.3% in volume and 8.0% in value.
China’s average coffee import price reached USD 7,588 per tonne in the first five months of 2026. This was up 7.7% from the corresponding period of 2025. The average import price of coffee from Vietnam rose by 5.8% year on year to USD 5,680 per tonne.
During the January–May period of 2026, China imported coffee from 50 countries and territories worldwide. Ethiopia remained China’s largest coffee supplier, exporting 29.2 thousand tonnes valued at USD 224.8 million. This was up 70.7% in volume and 109.0% in value in comparison to the same period in 2025.
As a result, Ethiopia’s share of China’s total coffee import volume increased from 19.97% in the first five months of 2025 to 33.99% during the same period in 2026.
Coffee from Vietnam
In addition, China imported 17.5 thousand tonnes of coffee from Vietnam in the first five months of 2026, valued at USD 99.6 million. This represented a year-on-year increase of 76.9% in volume and 87.1% in value. Vietnam’s share of China’s total coffee import volume rose from 11.57% in the first five months of 2025 to 20.40% during the same period in 2026.
Brazil ranked as China’s third-largest coffee supplier during the January–May period of 2026, exporting 15.0 thousand tonnes worth USD 118.8 million. This marked a decline of 52.5% in volume and 45.5% in value compared to the same period in 2025. Consequently, Brazil’s share of China’s total coffee imports fell sharply from 36.94% to 17.48%.
China’s coffee consumption has been expanding rapidly. This growth has been the result of changing consumption habits among younger consumers, accelerating urbanization, and the rapid expansion of coffee chains.
This trend reflects a significant shift in China’s coffee import structure. It also highlights the growing competitiveness of Vietnamese coffee in one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets.
According to Grand View Research, China’s coffee market was valued at approximately USD 3.26 billion in 2025. It is likely to reach USD 5.36 billion by 2033, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% during the 2026–2033 period.
“The above growth rate indicates that China’s coffee market still has considerable room for expansion over the medium and long term,” the Import-Export Department noted.
In terms of product segments, roasted coffee currently generates the highest revenue in the Chinese market. Meanwhile, ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee is likely to record the fastest growth in the coming years. This growth is supported by its convenience and strong appeal to increasingly urban and fast-paced consumer lifestyles.
